WELCOME TO COMUTINY
‘CoMutiny’ art is artistic hacker activism that is location independent, working with new, existing or loosely formed communities, wherever they are situated. Characterised by interaction, disruption and innovation with the community, and often involving a series of collaborators, who might not usually otherwise engage in the arts, use tech or even have never been part of a community.
‘CoMutineers’ come together to collaborate in projects that discover, develop and enhance social outcomes and skills through the hacker ethos.

Comutiny is the project which will allow me to research, reflect and respond to how communities are formed, nurtured and grown for all kinds of outcomes. As the dual threats of automation and climate change make cohesion and ability to build community quickly, become even more important. I believe understanding and reflecting how we can do community better, will allow us to develop resilience and digital tools to add value to our lives, whilst using art to question, reflect and iterate alongside the digital tools.

Just talking to Julia, I realised that she was a woman who not only got things done, but she was a powerhouse with significant political experience, passion and integrity. She inspired me to continue at times when I felt overwhelmed by the enormity of my task, and the fact that she was there to talk to gave me the courage to continue being the little pilot light until my other team members found me. Julia is brilliant. I learned SO much from her over the last couple of years. Work with her. You’ll be better for it.
I have worked with Julia in a number of settings over the past few years and I have always been impressed by the dynamic approach she takes to every project. As well as being a thoroughly nice person to spend time with Julia and her team always give 110% to any project and it always feels like they can’t do enough to help and support your work. About Me
Julia Higginbottom can best be described as a middle aged millenial, technologist producer and storyteller. Disruption through technology for societal change has been at the heart of her professional practice for the last 15 years. Making films and disrupting the media industry with new technology was where this practice first developed.
Whether through examining changes in storytelling through early 360 degree filming in 2007, innovating film production through new forms of sweat equity contracting, or even generating a film script through social media storytelling, she collaborates, using new tools, data and ideas to enable us to better connect; for social or commercial impact, or just for fun.
Working regularly with the open data and armchair citizen community predominantly, she also has high hopes for social impact through increasing transparency and using art techniques such as learning, iterating and improving, to facilitate change.
